When I was studying for my Intermediate in Trichy, I had a book titled 'Art Of An Essayist" This book was a collection of several essays of eminent essayists of yore.I remember the essays Chocolate Bus, Chimney Sweepers, etc etc.I was frantically searching for that book   to reread those essays and enjoy. It is strange that essays are no more popular.
Congratulation for getting third prize in Kala Ghoda Contest.

Yes, Krishnan. I think the new essay is a reflection of the harried times we live in- most people have little time to consult the dictionary. In this day of sms txtng, it seems to be more important to convey an idea as quickly as possible.

Dear Nirupama,
There was a time we used to learn a few new metaphors and even words that were to be cosulted from dictionery when you read a good essay. Besides conveying  a  good thought , it also set in motion, a lot of imagination in the reader who could endlessly weave  the web and waft  of the main fabric as per his mental matrix by closing the pages and not infriging on the copy-right. But to-day, is the day of the digital .

Congrats. That made good reading.
It's a pity that grammar has had to fall by the wayside though, don't you think?

So true. I thought the essay came out a wee bit in journalism, what the regular columns put forth. But yes, the blog as you point out is the new essay and here to stay. Every one is an essayist and occasionally when you get to read an essay like this who is complaining !?!
